Openings and… Steak Knife Lockers?
Prepaid pizza for pickup, a newly kosher bakery, and a high-end steakhouse.
Restaurant Openings
A handful of restaurants have recently been added to the Manhattan Kosher Map:
Breads Bakery (vegetarian; not certified kosher) has a new in-house pop-up called Stretch Pizza, a collaboration with Wylie Dufresne (prepaid pizza available for pickup only). While some news articles mention Dufresne’s use of pepperoni at a previous restaurant, I confirmed by phone that the current pop-up inside Breads is completely vegetarian.
Michaeli Bakery (dairy; certified by the IKC) had opened before the pandemic as a vegetarian but not certified kosher establishment; they recently took the kosher certification plunge. Adir Michaeli worked as a pastry chef at none other than Breads Bakery before starting a bakery of his own.
Mocha Red Steakhouse + Mixology Bar (meat; certified by the OU) is an upscale steakhouse and bar offering (very large and expensive) steaks, cocktails, beer, and wine. Its most interesting offering, however, was spotted by Eater NY in their own recent restaurant openings roundup: “The restaurant offers a membership program, where regulars can … rent lockers to store steak knives and unfinished bottles of wine.”
Lockers. For steak knives.
It’s true. I sort of understand the unfinished bottle of wine piece, but I haven’t been able to come up with a situation in which I’d actually want to store steak knives at a restaurant.
I’m genuinely curious. Are there folks out there for whom this dining perk serves a real need? Would you store steak knives in a rented restaurant locker?
